The Building and Safety Division

The Building and Safety Division is a part of the Community Development Department. The Division has five positions that include the Chief Building Official, Plans Exmaniner, Building Permit Technician, and two Building Inspectors.

The Building Division regulates construction and occupancy of all residential, commercial and industrial buildings in order to ensure life, fire and health safety. Prior to issuance of building permits, the division performs plan check of all proposed construction projects which includes additions, and alterations to existing buildings. The building division also plan checks grading and erosion control plans. Inspections also occur on grading and erosion control for commercial buildings, industrial buildings and single family dwellings. Field inspections are performed on all new construction, additions, structural alterations and demolitions for compliance to all structural, fire, safety, health safety and life safety requirements. The responsibilities of the division also include providing the general public with basic construction information, seismic safety information, flood information, calculating of fees, and issuing building, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, grading and demolition permits. Another general service the division provides is flood information within the city limits. All data, flood zones, panel numbers, and map revision dates are from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)
